Tonello launches Elmira's first 'e-campaign' for Mayor

Democratic Elmira mayoral candidate John Tonello formally launched his campaign Web site today, marking the first time in city history that a mayoral candidate has reached out to voters in this way.

"The Web is a truly democratic medium that empowers people, and that's what my campaign is all about," Tonello said.

The Web site -– www.johntonello.com -– details his stand on key issues, offers a personal biography, a newsroom, and easy-to-use contact forms. Tonello, a Web developer and new media professional, developed the site himself with the help of his campaign team.

"Visitors to my site can learn about me, and easily share their thoughts so I can learn from them," Tonello said. "It's not so much about the technology as it is about modern communication, which is exactly what Elmirans tell me they want to see from their next mayor."

The Web site is just one way Tonello is reaching out to people to collect ideas and encourage public participation in his campaign and the political process, he said. "In order to change Elmira we must engage Elmirans," he said.

Tonello said he plans to use the Internet, e-mail, and technology like no other mayoral candidate in city history.

"Elmira is the birthplace of high-speed Internet service to the home, and our information infrastructure is among the best in the world," he said. "It's a hidden asset – much like water, sewer, gas and electricity – that sets this city apart. It's a competitive advantage I plan to highlight as mayor to encourage business and industry."
